The Vail School District is the only one in the state
to receive an award from the national Kids Voting program this year.
Kids Voting aims to educate students on the history,
responsibility and importance of the democratic process in their state
and country. It also seeks to create "lifelong voters" - and increase
adult voting as well.
Vail district students and administrators were recognized
for the commitment they have shown to the program at an April 22 school
board meeting.
Michelle Steinberg, executive director of Kids Voting
Arizona, presented the award - a Lucite star.
Steinberg said her organization has been working closely
with the district for years to make sure all components of the program
are in place.
"It's a priority for the district," she said.
In the program, students are allowed to practice voting
by using early ballots, going online or going to actual polling places.
The curriculum is "grade-level-specific,"
Steinberg said, and it satisfies social studies requirements.
Last year more than 48,000 students in Arizona voted
for real candidates in the Kids Voting Arizona program.
